Experiments with FOIL to induce spatial representations

چکیده
Spatial representations are useful in computer vision, graphics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS’s), diagrammatic reasoning, and robot motion planning, to name a few. The representations may be geometric, topological, statistical and symbolic in nature. Depending on the domain and the application, there are a wide variety of methods available to represent space and perform computations and reasoning on the representation. The focus of our research has been computer vision, specifically object recognition based on models. We discuss this specific problem and present some experiments with a relational learning system, namely FOIL 1. We also discuss the specific needs and requirements of computer vision and attempt to explain our experience with FOIL.

Saliency Cognition of Urban Monuments Based on Verbal Descriptions of Mental-Spatial Representations (Case Study: Urban Monuments in Qazvin)
Urban monuments encompass a wide range of architectural works either intentionally or unintentionally. These works are often salient due to their inherently explicit or hidden components and qualities in the urban context. Therefore, they affect the mental-spatial representations of the environment and make the city legible. However, the ambiguity of effective components often complicates their...
متن کاملCharacterising Semantic Relatedness using Interpretable Directions in Conceptual Spaces
Various applications, such as critique-based recommendation systems and analogical classifiers, rely on knowledge of how different entities relate. In this paper, we present a methodology for identifying such semantic relationships, by interpreting them as qualitative spatial relations in a conceptual space. In particular, we use multi-dimensional scaling to induce a conceptual space from a rel...
متن کاملMemory for spatial location: role of the hippocampus in mediating spatial pattern separation.
A paradigm based on measuring short-term memory for spatial location information as a function of spatial similarity between distal cues was developed to examine the role of pattern separation in the modulation of short-term memory for spatial information. A delayed-match-to-sample for spatial location task using a dryland version of the Morris water maze was used to assess spatial pattern sepa...
متن کاملRepresentations of scene layout can consist of independent, functional pieces.
A scene prime can induce a mental representation of layout that is functional in the sense that it facilitates the processing of depth relations in a subsequent same-scene target. Five experiments indicated that the representation can consist of separate and independent functional regions. In each experiment, primes with as many as four unrelated regions facilitated spatial processing within ea...
متن کاملThe influence of spatial context and the role of intentionality in the interpretation of animacy from motion.
We present three experiments investigating how spatial context influences the attribution of animacy to a moving target. Each of our displays contained a moving object (the target) that might, depending on the way it moved, convey the impression that it was alive (animate). We investigated the mechanisms underlying this attribution by manipulating the nature of the spatial context surrounding t...
